This collaboration between Eileen Kiyonaga and myself brings together two distinct yet complementary practices, rooted in our shared fascination with the natural world. Eileen, a multidisciplinary artist trained in industrial design and fine furniture, works predominantly with wood, drawing out its inherent textures and imperfect lines. I create abstract acrylic works on canvas that explore atmosphere, movement, and the restorative qualities of nature. Together, our approaches merge material and mark, precision and gesture, structure and softness, creating a dialogue between solid form and ephemeral movement.
At the heart of our collaboration is a celebration of soft fascination that gentle, restorative attention that nature invites. Eileen’s wooden forms carry the tactile presence of the forest and the fluid geometries she finds in her surroundings, while my layered brushstrokes evoke the fleeting qualities of light, air, and water. Each study in this series is unique, shaped by the interplay of our practices and the surprises that emerge in process. Inspired by the awe-inspiring landscape of the Sea to Sky, ancestral lands of the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations, our works reflect our deep connection to this place through family, exploration, and daily life, honoring the environment that continues to inspire and sustain our creativity.
